MOT check FAQs
Is the MOT check on Caroat completely free?
Yes. All MOT records, expiry dates, test pass/fail results, advisory notices, and recorded mileage readings come directly from official DVSA databases and are 100% free with no registration required.
Is this the same as the official VOSA MOT history check?
Yes. VOSA was renamed the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) in 2014. The official digital database contains every test recorded under both VOSA and DVSA since 2005.
When is my car's next MOT due?
Cars in Great Britain must have their first MOT test when they reach 3 years of age (4 years in Northern Ireland), and every 12 months thereafter. Enter your registration plate above to see your exact MOT expiry date.
What is the difference between an MOT advisory and a minor defect?
An advisory is a warning from the tester that a component (such as a tyre or brake pad) is wearing and will soon need replacement. A minor defect is a fault that does not pose an immediate danger but should be repaired soon. Neither causes an MOT fail.
Can I drive my car if the MOT has expired?
No. Driving without a valid MOT is illegal in the UK and carries a fine of up to £1,000, unless you are driving directly to a pre-booked MOT test appointment with evidence of the booking.
How early can I take my car for an MOT test?
You can take your car for an MOT up to one month (minus a day) before its current MOT certificate expires and keep the same renewal date for the following year.
