Where the data comes from
Four sources, and the report names which one each section came from. MOT results, advisories and the mileage recorded at each test come from the DVSA. Tax, SORN, keeper and V5C records come from the DVLA. Finance agreements come from the UK finance register, and write-off categories and stolen markers come from the insurance and police registers that our data provider reads.
Caroat never presents a check as clear when it did not run. If a register returns nothing, that section is blank and says so. A site that shows a green tick for a check it could not complete is telling you something it does not know.
What the report cannot tell you
It is a paper trail, not an inspection. It will not tell you whether the clutch is tired, whether the car has been repaired badly after a bump that was never claimed for, or whether the service history in the glovebox is genuine. Use it to rule a car out before you travel, then still look at the car, match the VIN on the metal to the V5C, and drive it.
It also cannot correct an official record. If the DVSA or DVLA data looks wrong, the help page explains who holds each record and how to ask them to fix it.

Common questions
What does the Caroat premium report cost?
£6.99 for one report, or £9.99 for two. It is a single payment. There is no subscription, no account and nothing to cancel afterwards.
Is the report a PDF?
No. It is a web page you open in the browser, so it stays readable on a phone at the kerbside. You can print it or save it as a PDF yourself if you want a copy.
How long do I have to open it?
There is no cut off. A paid report is kept for as long as Caroat runs, and you can open it again at any time from the help page using the email address you paid with.
What happens if a record is missing?
The report says so. A check that did not run is left blank and labelled, never shown as clear. A blank finance section means the register returned nothing for that plate, not that the car is confirmed clear.
Can I check a second car later?
Yes, on the £9.99 two report bundle. The second report can be used on any registration for up to 12 months from purchase, so you do not have to decide both cars on the same day.
