Frequently asked questions

What information do I need to check if a vehicle is insured?
For your own vehicle you normally need only the registration number on the free askMID / Navigate check. Extra fields such as name, email, accident date and the other vehicle's registration are required when you run a paid one-off search after an accident.
Do I need to pay to check if a vehicle is insured?
No for your own vehicle. The Motor Insurers' Bureau free check confirms whether your plate is on the Motor Insurance Database. Checking someone else's vehicle after an accident uses the askMID one-off lookup and attracts a fee.
What should I do if my vehicle details are incorrect?
Contact your insurer or broker directly. askMID and the Motor Insurers' Bureau cannot amend policy data for you. Only the insurer that uploaded the record can correct it.
Can DVLA tell me if my car is insured?
No. DVLA covers tax, SORN and vehicle identity. Insurance status sits on the Motor Insurance Database run by the Motor Insurers' Bureau. Use askMID for cover, and Caroat for tax and MOT checks.
Does Caroat sell car insurance quotes on this page?
No. This page only explains how to use the official MIB askMID check and links you there. Caroat does not run an insurance quote comparison here.
